Mozambique has legalized homosexuality on Monday when a new penal code came into force that swept away old Portuguese colonial laws, in a victory for campaigners for gay rights in Africa. The old code, dating back to 1886, targeted anyone "who habitually engages in vices against nature", but no known prosecutions were brought after Mozambique became independent in 1975. Breaking the law was theoretically punishable by up to three years of hard labour. Dercio Tsandzana, an influential blogger and activist, said there had been no public discussion of homosexual rights. "The government instead abides by the external pressure put by some embassies and foreign donors," he said. Homosexuality is punishable by death in Sudan, Nigeria and Mauritania.

His comment comes at the back of the legalization of gay marriage in the US by the Supreme Court. During Mugabe's weekly radio interview with Zimbabwe's national radio last Saturday, he said: "I've just concluded since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people and enjoys an attractive countenance thus if it becomes necessary , I shall travel to Washington, D.C. , get down on my knee and ask Obama's hand. I can't understand how these people dare to defy Christ's explicit orders as our Lord prohibited mankind from sodomy.'' Mugabe said the American Government is run by pervert, Satan-worshipers who insult the Great American nation. He reportedly added "That the American tradition and heritage was based on lofty Christian principles, but to the detriment of this great nation, America's corrupt political elite is acting according to their diabolic whims. Obama's endorsement of gay marriage, the first ever f...

The governor said Okonjo-Iweala, reported by November 2014 "that we had $4.1 billion in but today the Accountant General office reported that you have $2.0 billion in the account". Oshiomhole is part of a four-man committee that includes the Chairman of the Governors Forum and Zamfara Governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, Malam Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna and Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom. Aso Rock Villa PHOTO: PHILIP OJISUA • Crisis Is Self-inflicted — Oyegun • We Shall Overcome It, Says Momoh  WATCHERS of the fast-paced and intriguing drama in the National Assembly and in the ranks of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in recent weeks may conclude that the scenes foreshadow more crisis for the ruling party. Having cut short at the polls script by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rule the country for 'the next 60 years', the APC appeared unprepared for the serious task of putting its actors on the stage. The fallout was last week's shameful climax when members of the House of Representatives threw decorum to the bins, exchanging expletives and punches. "What is happening is realpolitik and struggle for power. It is a storm in a teacup, and will soon die. It is not new at all. And I can assure you that it will not stop the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari from performing," said Former Minister of Information and National Executiv...

The large, round fish—about the size of a manhole cover—uses its warm blood as an advantage in the ocean's freezing depths. Deep-water fish called opah appear to be the first fully warm-blooded fish species ever discovered, according to a new paper published in Science. Researchers say the unique biology behind opah, also known as moonfish, allow the species to operate at peak performance even within frigid ocean depths. Being warm-blooded has its perks. Birds and mammals (or endotherms) conserve their internal heat to maintain high body temperatures, which helps them flee predators, chase prey and thrive in sub-zero climates. But fish—and other cold-blooded animals, like reptiles and amphibians—aren't so lucky. Most deep-sea fish move slowly, preferring to ambush prey rather than give chase, as their low body temperatures (and reaction speeds) mirror the cool ocean water. But now, scientists say they have discovered one exception to this rule: opah. "I...

ADEOSUN had one fervent passion, and that was an insatiable thirst for women. It was on a Saturday. Time was exactly 6p.m. He was cruising around the city in his Tokunbo car, evidently searching for a pretty damsel to spend the night with. Such are the common traits and expectations of Casanovas, and he was no exception. He had been driving for the past 30 minutes with no luck; all the 'babes' he saw didn't quite meet the quality and standard he wanted. Just then, as he was negotiating a bend at the popular Masha bus stop in Surulere, he spotted this enchanting and sweet-looking lady, walking alone towards Ogunlana Drive. 'Yeah, this is it!' he thought. The lady was simply beautiful. She had all it takes to make a man glow with desire. Her steps, too, were rhythmical and had cadences and flow. It seemed she was dancing to some unheard heavenly music as she walked. Her steps were calculating and sensuously inviting. Everything about her was out of ...

Fourteen Thai students were taken into custody early Saturday after staging an anti-coup rally on charges that could see them jailed for seven years, police said, as the ruling junta escalates its chokehold on dissent. The pro-democracy campaigners are among the few activists that have dared to publicly challenge Thailand's military rulers, who imposed severe curbs on civil liberties after seizing power from an elected government last year. Their arrests Friday followed a peaceful protest calling for an end to junta rule at Bangkok's Democracy Monument a day earlier, where spirited speeches and songs were met with claps and cheers from dozens of supporters. Thailand's generals have banned all political gatherings and criticism of the junta, frequently arresting critics and censoring the media. Colonel Chumphol Chanchanayothin, superintendent of a police station in the capital's historic area, said the students were taken to a remand prison in northern Ba...
