Oil Price Crash: Mismanagement, Corruption Backlash Hunt Economy

Corroborating the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) and Reconciliation Committee's assertions about NNPC's legacy of inefficiency and mismanagement, NRGI submitted that NNPC's mismanagement of public revenues and its performance failures persisted due to lack of political will by successive governments to reform the corporation. Last year, (NEITI) declared that about $25.3 billion of the nation's oil revenues missing. NEITI's former Executive Secretary, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, while briefing Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, said funds from crude product swap amounting to $866 million was lost from 2009 – 2011 and $8, 243 million in 2012. Naval Officer Impostor ‘Steals’ N13.9m Cars

A 39-year-old man Adekanla Ayodele has been accused of stealing five vehicles worth N13.9 million by impersonating a Navy Commander. Ayodele was said to have worn the naval uniform with the badge of a Commander and, in the company of some accomplices, obtained the five Toyota Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) from the owners sometime in December 2012. The owners, Mr Iredodia Obazee and Mr Usman Muda, reported to the police and Ayodele was later arrested. He was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates' Court in Lagos on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, stealing and impersonation preferred against him by the police. Prosecuting Inspector Stephen Molo told the court that the defendant, who resides in the Ajah area of Lagos, and others who are still at large unlawfully obtained the vehicles. WHO Raises Alarm as Zika Virus Spreads “Explosively”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the Zika virus, linked to severe birth defects in thousands of babies in Brazil, is "spreading explosively" and can infect as many as four million people. THE WHO Director-General, Margaret Chan, said this at a meeting on Friday with the agency's executive board in Geneva, adding that the spread of the mosquito-borne disease had gone from a mild threat to one of alarming proportions. She said that to help determine its response, WHO would convene an emergency meeting on Monday, because the level of alarm was extremely high. Chan told the Geneva gathering that in 2015, the virus was detected in the Americas, where it was now spreading explosively. She stressed that as of today, cases have been reported in 23 countries and territories in the region.
