ANTI-GAY LAW: We’ll Pressure Nigeria To Reverse The Law – United States

Image
The United States government has vowed to continue to press the Nigerian government to reverse its anti-gay law. The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said this during a live-web chat with journalists in Washington. Our correspondent monitored the web chat in Abuja. Thomas-Greenfield also said that America was not bothered that Chinese companies were fast taking over the African market from their US counterparts. President Goodluck Jonathan had on January 7, 2014  assented  to the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2013 which criminalises homosexuality in the country. On January 14 when it became public that the President had signed the bill into law, the US, Canada and the European Union openly expressed reservations over the law. Thomas-Greenfield, who said the US had adopted the  protection of the rights of same-sex people as part of its foreign policies, vowed that Washington would continue to mount and sustain pressure on N...

OPEN LETTER TO EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Dear Eksuites, Our student union has been through thick and thin in the past few years, at a point, we were recently subjected to the leadership of an inexperienced Student Union President who unfortunately could not record an achievement in the name of his administration. Mr Ibitoye Babatope failed us; we were forced to endure a year of unidirectional leadership. Thanks to Mr Kadri Olawale and others who gave all they can to ensure the administration didn't collapse. Student Union elections are here again, this is the decision making era. An era where our votes would not just stand to elect Student Union Leaders who would lead us for another year. It is a time to tell the world what part of history we want our union to stand; the good or bad. Over the last few weeks, we have all been drowning in a quicksand of aggressive campaigns, phone calls and text messages. The Temitope Awelewa-led EKSUSU PRESS also deemed it necessary to organise a manifesto/debate. All this were don...

But What Could We All Do? A Tribute To My Uncle, AbdulRazaq Zubair Adegbuagun

Wednesday 8th July 2015 would rank amongst the days I would never forget in life. The day started brightly, by my timetable, I should have a lecture by 8:00 am, so I rushed to school so I won't miss the lecture. I got to class around 7:40am, sat in class and was expecting the lecturer. Around 9:46 am, when it was certain that the lecturer won't show up, I left class with a few other colleagues and headed towards the Microbiology Laboratory. On my way to the Laboratory, I heard someone call my name. Lo and behold, it was my big cousin, I rushed to meet him, hoping to disturb him a bit, to my disappointment he wasn't really in a good mood. When I got closer to him, he said to me softly, "Lawal's dad is dead".  I will forever remember my shock and consternation on hearing such disheartening news. I was traumatized, fighting really hard to hold back tears. I couldn't even say a word. I just walked away.... My uncle AbdulRazaq Zubair  belongs to the heavens n...

Image
The Ekiti State High Court complex in Ado- Ekiti, the state capital, was in chaos yesterday as suspected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hoodlums beat up witnesses, who testified before the Election Petitions Tribunal. The three-man panel was hearing a petition filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate in Ekiti Central, Gbenga Olofin, who is challenging the return of Senator Fatimat Rasaki of the PDP. Also beaten up were Olofin's supporters who were in court to witness the proceedings. Olofin closed his case after calling eight witnesses. Mrs. Rasaki opened her defence by testifying. A lengthy argument ensued between lawyers of both parties on the admissibility of the voter register used for the election. Counsel to the petitioner Yemi George argued in favour of the admissibility of the voter register but the respondent's counsel, Jude Ogodi, opposed the motion on the grounds that it was not initially listed as an evidence. The Tribunal Chairman, Justic...

The Unsavoury Side of BVN Policy Implementation

Image
THE on-going exercise that requires Deposit Money Banks (DMB)- that is, banks that accepts deposit from the public- to compulsorily enrol the biometrics of their customers to create a unique Bank Verification Number (BVN) for each customer is one of the best things that has happened in the Nigerian financial system today. Apart from the issue of right to privacy under the constitution, it is a huge step towards dealing with fraud and identity theft in the Nigeria financial system. It will also be a viable tool in the fight against the scourge of money laundering, both in Nigeria and in the global economy by cutting funds to drug cartels and terrorist in Nigeria and around the world. With global banks like HSBC, Barclays, etc falling prey to criminal drug syndicates, the importance of a BVN cannot be over-emphasised. Notwithstanding the noble idea behind the BVN, it is unfortunate that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has imposed a deadline of June 2015 for all customers to enrol into...

Mozambique Legalizes Gay Marriage Mozambique has legalized homosexuality on Monday when a new penal code came into force that swept away old Portuguese colonial laws, in a victory for campaigners for gay rights in Africa. The old code, dating back to 1886, targeted anyone “who habitually engages in vices against nature”, but no known prosecutions were brought after Mozambique became independent in 1975. Breaking the law was theoretically punishable by up to three years of hard labour. Dercio Tsandzana, an influential blogger and activist, said there had been no public discussion of homosexual rights. “The government instead abides by the external pressure put by some embassies and foreign donors,” he said. Homosexuality is punishable by death in Sudan, Nigeria and Mauritania.

Robert Mugabe Asks President Obama to marry him

Image
His comment comes at the back of the legalization of gay marriage in the US by the Supreme Court. During Mugabe's weekly radio interview with Zimbabwe's national radio last Saturday, he said: "I've just concluded since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people and enjoys an attractive countenance thus if it becomes necessary , I shall travel to Washington, D.C. , get down on my knee and ask Obama's hand. I can't understand how these people dare to defy Christ's explicit orders as our Lord prohibited mankind from sodomy.'' Mugabe said the American Government is run by pervert, Satan-worshipers who insult the Great American nation. He reportedly added "That the American tradition and heritage was based on lofty Christian principles, but to the detriment of this great nation, America's corrupt political elite is acting according to their diabolic whims. Obama's endorsement of gay marriage, the first ever f...

The governor said Okonjo-Iweala, reported by November 2014 "that we had $4.1 billion in but today the Accountant General office reported that you have $2.0 billion in the account". BUSINESS: One Dollar - One Naira: After Buhari's Election Naira Extremely Falls

After the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari about a month ago, the naira demonstrates a strong fall against the dollar from 180 to 222. According to analysts, the future of the naira looked bleak because increasing business activities have made importers and investors move their foreign exchange demands to the parallel market, putting pressure on the naira at the segment. The source notes that the Central Bank of Nigeria has been depleting the external reserves in a bid to defend the local currency. Punch reports that the external reserves fell to $29.03bn on June 22, from $29.8bn on May 18, data from the CBN website showed. Experts also add that the latest movements in the external reserves meant that the naira was beginning to come under some fresh pressure.
